Turning Complex AI Projects into Compelling Stories

Ever since I established myself as a freelance writer, I’ve attracted and retained a steady stream of IT clients. It’s a sector I’ve always loved - complex, fast-moving and full of fascinating people and projects. Consultants tend to move around frequently and, happily for me, they often take me with them.
That’s exactly what happened with FOIL. I first started working with the team back in 2016, when they were part of Altius, before continuing to write for them following their acquisition by Avanade in 2021. When they launched FOIL to disrupt the AI consultancy space, I was thrilled to stay on board.
So when FOIL asked me to write a case study on their very first AI project - for Ground Control, a leading UK grounds maintenance company on an ambitious digital transformation journey, I jumped at the chance.
To do the project justice, I:
- Spoke to FOIL’s consultants to understand the data strategy and AI-driven tools they built.
- Interviewed Chris Howell, CIO at Ground Control, to capture his first-hand experience and feedback.
- Translated complex processes, from service standardisation to the launch of an Intelligent Quoting app, into a clear, engaging narrative that still reflects the technical depth.
The finished case study showcases how FOIL helped Ground Control build the digital and data foundations to support its growth and sustainability ambitions - including cutting quoting times from two weeks to two days and reducing carbon emissions in the process.
